Smokey is a 4 year-old smilin’ pile of beautiful red, curly fur.

While Smokey’s coat is just gorgeous, he does have allergies that need simple but regular care. He’s on allergy and thyroid medication (pills morning and night), and he needs to be bathed once a week with medicated shampoo. But he loves to takes baths and be brushed, so it’s not a big production.

Like most rescues, Smokey needs basic obedience training. He’s learning not to pull on the leash, and he doesn’t beg for food (or counter surf) and he stays off the furniture. When he first arrived at rescue, he had a tendency to jump on people, but his foster family says he’s doing much better now.

Smokey is a very quiet dog – he just doesn’t bark much. He does get a little over-excited and happy when he meets new people and new dogs, but that should settle down once he’s in a forever home of his own. He gets along great with his foster brother and the family cat.

He will sleep through the night in the crate with the door wide open, so he’s obviously getting more and more comfortable. He knows how to use a doggie door, and he even has learned to run on the treadmill (great for rainy days). He loves to play with kongs, nylabones and balls…he will retrieve but is a little slow to give you the ball back.

Smokey would do great in a family with kids and other pets (either dogs or dog lovin' cats). He needs a family who will take the time to care for his skin, but just look at the reward you’ll get – a beautiful boy who will be the center of attention everywhere he goes. He’s just waiting for your hugs – and for you to throw the ball!
